Raised Access Floor, Power Distribution. This one is personal…

Having worked with Architects, Design & Build contractors, Furniture Manufacturers and Dealers since the 90’s I can come across this issue on every single job… But why?

There is no reason why floor boxes and grommets should ever be installed in the ‘wrong place’ but you have to integrate the Furniture Consultant into the construction team early days. Far too often we find it’s just left until the furniture arrives on site… I get the concept that a raised access floor is easily modified but how hard would it be to just get it ‘Right First Time’?

Why has the specification not changed in the last twenty years? I have my suspicions but why is the standard power distribution typically one grommet per pair of desks rather than a single Power Distribution Unit per cluster of desks? This ‘New’ solution would be so much more cost effective, reduce the amount of grommets, total number of holes required and vertical cable runs into the desk.

Is this to do with the knowledge (or lack of knowledge) of the architect or the main contractor? What incentive does the Electrical contractor or the Design & Build contractor to reduce the electrical package and propose the potential cost savings?

On larger projects the cost savings could be considerable. Considering the amount of detail required on a project It’s strange that this detail hasn’t change for so many years…
